Ladder improvement

Here's what the ladder looked like: metal rungs only two inches wide. VERY uncomfortable for bare feet!

Metal rung

We cut lengths of 1x4 pine to the width of the rungs, and notched their ends to fit inside the side rails and prevent wobbling. Note: don't make the mistake we made and cut vertical notches! Remember, the ladder stands at an angle, so the treads must be angled too, in order to be horizontal. About 15-20° should do it.

Wooden tread

Here's what the new, larger tread looks like resting on top of the metal tread:

Tread in place

We cut carpeting to fit around each tread, and stapled it in place on the underside.

Cutting rug to fit

We mounted the carpeted wooden treads on top of the existing metal ones, and secured them by screwing into them from underneath, through holes drilled in the metal treads. MUCH more comfortable! (For some reason I didn't take pictures of the finished product. Sorry about that!)
